Focusing on life: Typography

I took some time off from beading this week and read a silly romance novel. I was in the thrift store and the title of this book just grabbed me. Isn't that seal interesting looking? It looks so very official. Before beads I costumed dolls. I have dozens of books on 1800's clothing. The beautiful pink dress is probably what made me select this book to read. I am attracted to pink. The novel was set in 1803. I hoped it described some of their clothing but it didn't. It was a fun read. This was the typography that drew me in this week.

    1. Yes I did judge it by it's cover. I haven't read a romance novel in years so it was a fun diversion.

  3. Great book cover! I have a 'thing' for seals... the whole ritual of a personal stamp and sealing wax... I was born in the wrong era!
    Have a wonderful week :)

  5. I am often attracted to a book by its cover, something I may have passed up otherwise. I use to buy albums back in the day by their cover also.

  7. Hi Becky, The cover IS beautiful - I can see why you were drawn to it. That's the sad thing we lose with eReaders. Sure, the colors are vibrant on some but I don't as often choose a book by look or feel when I am buying that way. The typography on your book is interesting too. I would have expected it to be fancier but its simplicity makes the title stand out. Well done!

    1. Thanx Paula. I always look at the books when I am in a thrift store. You can find some very interesting things there. The pink around the letters is what I saw first so I figured it qualified as typography even if the font was simple.

    1. It was a fun read. The seal made it look so official. I am fascinated by the 1800's so I liked the book. It was full of cloak and dagger intrigue and Napoleon's court.

  9. it is a very interesting cover! I love this style - I find it so romantic! and every now and again ... you gotta put the beads down! (I keep telling myself that - ha!)

    1. Thanx Cynthia. The book was fun to read. The beads never stay down for long. I have a necklace on my bead table right now that only needs a clasp put on it to be done.

  12. What I love about carnations is they last forever in a vase! In fact, I have a vase full of them right now which are 3 weeks old. They are amazing! The book cover is stunning.. typography and all.

  13. Hi Becky - looks like you and I have more in common that just beads! :-) I love the color pink as well, and happen to be fascinated by the 1800's and period clothing as well. In fact, one of the books I have propped on my treadmill now is about Victorian clothing from the 1860's to 1900. When you have a moment, please let me know some of your favorites - I am building my library of reference books. :-)

  15. Yes that book cover drew me in. The pink around the black letters on the spine in what I saw first. The when I saw the pink dress it was settled, the book was mine.

  16. Oh my...I am not alone! I often chose a book by its' cover. What a relief, my secret is out and shared with you Becky. Honestly I have chided myself sometimes for deciding to read a book based on its' cover but I find I can't help myself and I usually enjoy the read. I'm a pink girl too.

    1. Ema we are visual people. Not everyone is as aware of it as you seem to be. Pink isn't just for girlie girls. There are so many different shades. It is a happy color.

  18. I often wonder about the "Psychology" of book covers as I am sure there are fonts and illustrations they choose about others due to their market appeal and I agree this is a pret
    ty one!

  19. I picked this book by it's cover. I think most choices are that way. Yes they do pick fonts etc. to attract us. There is probably whole science to it.

  21. That book cover would've had me, too. I love period novels... I doubt I would've liked living back then, but I would've liked the dressing up.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree that living back then would be hard. I also would like the dressing up. But I know that it would not be for long as corsets are very uncomfortable.

  23. LOL Just read your reply to Janet. I'm with you and the corset comment. Besides, don't think they made them in extra large!

  24. Well Marlene I guess that is why I made doll costumes. I could indulge in all the fussy frilly stuff that wasn't part of my life.

  26. It was a fun read. I have not read a romance novel in a very long time. I am fascinated with the 1800's so this one sucked me in.

  27. Ah yes, it has always interested me that I WILL "choose a book by its cover"; always. If it doesn't "look" good, it will not appeal to me. That's a very pretty cover! I'm a pink girl too. :-)

  28. I agree Lori. The cover just drew me in. Glad to hear that others like pink too.
